Srinagar, May 08: Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials have announced that the installation of street lights will commence within next two months in the areas that have not yet been covered by the department. The necessary documentation has been finalized, and it is expected that around 50,000 street lights will be set up in the coming months.
Ishtiyaq Ahmad, the Joint Commissioner of SMC, said that every area in the city will have street lights installed. Currently, 69,000 street lights have been set up primarily on main roads, and the next step is to install them in lanes and bylanes. Many residents have been complaining that a majority of the area has been left without street lights, with some alleging that elected corporators have installed lights according to their wishes and in their relatives’ houses.
Residents of Batmaloo and adjoining areas have been promised by SMC officials that lights would be installed in their areas, but no progress has been made since last year. The absence of street lights in many densely populated areas has made it difficult for people to venture out after sunset, particularly for elderly individuals going out for Nimaz. Shakir Ahmad of the Old City stated that most of the lanes in the area are without street lights, and despite the officials’ promises, the lights have not been installed yet.
In response, the Joint Commissioner of SMC Srinagar has assured residents that all areas will be covered within the next two months. The office added that people need to cooperate for a short time, and their genuine grievances would be addressed after the installation of street lights.
