Ganderbal, Oct 25: Division of Fisheries Resource Management, Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST-Kashmir, Rangil, Ganderbal organised 2-day Seminar entitled “Fish Diversity and Conservation of Wular Lake: Insights and Implications” at Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST-K, Rangil, Ganderbal and Bandipora.
The seminar was sponsored by Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA), Govt. of Jammu & Kashmir. Students of post-graduate and doctoral degree programmes of the faculty participated in the seminar. Special lectures on conservation and management of Wular Lake and the ichthyofaunal diversity of the lake were delivered by experts.
The inaugural function was organised on 22-10-2024 at Rangil and the Organising Secretary of the seminar Dr. Tasaduq Hussain gave an overview about the different activities to be undertaken during the two-day Seminar. The inaugural session was presided over as Chief Guest by Prof. (Dr.) Haroon Rashid Naik, Director Research, SKUAST-Kashmir who threw light on the importance of biodiversity and the conservation of aquatic resources. Dr. Naik appreciated the efforts of the faculty in conducting the programme.
Dean, Faculty of Fisheries, Dr Farooz Ahmad Bhat in his welcome address discussed the present status and issues related to Fish Biodiversity, sustainable Fish & Fisheries of Jhelum River System including the Wular Lake. Dean, in his address also discussed the measures needed to conserve the Wular for future progeny and livelihood of thousands of fisheries in and around Wular lake.
Owais Farooq Mir, Project Coordinator, WUCMA (J&K Govt.) attended the event as Guest of Honour and gave an exhaustive presentation on the conservation and management measures initiated by WUCMA for conservation of Wular Lake.
The event was attended, among others by Heads of various divisions of the faculty, Staff members and participants.
