The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Kashmir Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST-K) Kashmir on Tuesday celebrated World Environmental Day at famous tourist destination Doodhpatri with Schools and NGOs at Doodhpatri.

During the program, it was highlighted that humans have a moral duty to protect the environment and promote the sustainable development of the world for future generations.

“Environmental degradation is harmful and is endangering the long-term health and security of creatures, plants, and people.”

Dr. Bilal Ahmad, Head, Division of Social Sciences, Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST-K shared that event was organized jointly by SKUAST-K (Division of Social and Basic Sciences, Faculty of Forestry & Division of Social Sciences, Faculty of Fisheries), School for Rural Development & Environment (SRDE), NCA, IDA, J&K Forest Department, Unique Educational Institute (10+2), Duroo, Sopore Kashmir at Doodhpathri Budgam.

While sharing the details of the program Dr. Bilal Ahmad said speakers from different walks of life spoke on the occasion about the importance of the environment, environmental issues, and our role in the protection of the environment.

Dr. Bilal Ahmad in his speech discussed the meaning of the Verse of the holy Quran, “Eat and drink, but do not waste. Surely He does not like the wasteful. While sharing the details of the program Dr Bilal Ahmad said that such seminars educate the people about the importance of the environment and our responsibility towards its protection.

In the one-day program more than 150 students, elders, social activists and officials from various institutes/departments participated. Dr Sheikh Ghulam Rasool from SRDE  in his address discussed in detail the importance of the environment and world environmental day 2023.

Dr. Syed Naseem Geelani, Head, Division of Social and Basic Sciences, FoF, SKUAST-K discussed in detail the importance of Forests and our responsibility towards the Conservation and protection of forests.

In 1972, the UN General Assembly designated 5th June as World Environment Day, it came into being at the Stockholm Conference on human environment. The first celebration, under the slogan “Only One Earth” took place in 1974 in city of Spokane in US.

In the following years, WED has developed as a platform to raise awareness on the problems facing our environment such as air pollution, plastic pollution, illegal wildlife trade, sustainable consumption, sea-level increase, and food security, among others.

This year, World Environment Day’s theme is “Solutions to Plastic Pollution”. Plastic pollution is a global crisis that is threatening the health of our planet. Millions of tons of plastic waste each year end up in our oceans, rivers, and landfills, causing harm to wildlife, ecosystems, and ultimately, human health. This is a challenge that requires urgent action from individuals, governments, NGOs and businesses alike.

Dr. Shaikh Gh Rasool in his speech thanked all participants and speakers of this program especially, the Sarpanch of the area Mr. Nazir Ahmad, Faculty and scholars of SKUAST-K, Staff, and students of Unique Educational Institute, Duroo, Sopore Kashmir, Ms. Lubna, Mr. Molvi Maqbool, Mr. Adil,  local people who provided their full support for the success of this program. The program was also supported by the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of FoF, SKUAST-K
