Six-month pregnant woman found dead in Handwara village

Kupwara, Sept 29: A family from Wahipora village of Langate in north Kashmir has alleged that their six-month pregnant daughter was strangled to death by her husband on Monday. The incident has sparked protests in the area, with relatives and locals demanding stern action against the accused. The deceased woman was identified as Jasmeena Begum, wife of Ghulam Hassan Nadroo. Emotional scenes were witnessed when her body reached her native village. Relatives alleged that her husband attempted to cover up the crime by claiming she had hanged herself. They rejected his version and said visible marks on her neck made it clear she was murdered. Family members said Jasmeena was speaking to her sister on the phone minutes before the incident and had complained of harassment by her husband. "After the incident, she was taken to Sopore Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival," they said. Later, her body was shifted to GMC Handwara, where it remained in the mortuary for a night. The family said Jasmeena's death has devastated them, leaving behind a three-year-old child and an unborn baby. Her brother said the couple had separated from the joint family. "We helped them build their own house," he said. Following the incident, protesters blocked the Kupwara-Sopore road, demanding strict punishment. They said the killing of a pregnant woman was an inhuman act and should be met with the harshest legal action. Police said the accused has been detained for questioning under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS). A senior officer from Handwara police told Rising Kashmir that all legal formalities were completed and the body was handed over to the family for the last rites. "The post-mortem report will establish the cause of death. Police assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty," he said. The family said they will continue to press for justice until the accused is punished.
