Ganderbal, Sep 13: A sozni artist from Batwina area of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district named Showkat Ahmad Lone embarked on a journey that breathed new life into a traditional craft, blending it seamlessly with contemporary elements.

Showkat’s creations are nothing short of mesmerizing, adorned with striking portraits of prominent personalities. His work quickly gained widespread admiration and applause, bringing a fresh perspective to the age-old Sozni art.

With a legacy spanning two decades, Showkat expressed profound happiness at the transformation of his craft, saying, “This innovative modern touch to my work has not only filled me with joy but has also given my craft a refreshing and much-needed perspective.”

His artistic endeavors did not go unnoticed. He proudly declared, “This art form has been witnessing a decline, but I’ve strived to inject new vitality by weaving the portraits of influential and renowned individuals. For this, I was honored with a UT level award by the Handicraft Department in 2022, and I’m finally receiving the recognition I deserve.”

Among his impressive creations, Showkat wove the images of notable figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Dr. Manmohan Singh into his exquisite tapestries. Additionally, he paid homage to regional figures, including LG Manoj Sinha, former Governor N.N. Vohra, DGP Dilbagh Singh, and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, showcasing his finesse and intricate skills.

While basking in the recognition he had garnered for his modernized Sozni art, Showkat also shed light on the prevailing challenges faced by artisans in the industry.

Showcasing a piece of art featuring an image of Lord Ram and Sita on one side and the majestic Taj Mahal on the other, Showkat highlighted his commitment to inclusivity, stating, “I created the Ram and Sita picture out of respect because I do not differentiate based on religion.”

The artist called upon the government to take measures that would ensure fair compensation for the hard work put in by artisans.

Looking ahead, Showkat shared his ambitious plans to continue his modernized Sozni artistry. “I intend to weave portraits of Bollywood actors and pieces that depict the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir,” he revealed, reflecting his dedication to preserving and evolving this cherished tradition.

In a world where tradition and innovation often stand at odds, Showkat’s modernized Sozni art serves as a shining example of how heritage can be revitalized and celebrated, bridging the past and the present with a thread of creativity. His work not only pays tribute to the rich tradition of Sozni art but also paves the way for its continued existence in a rapidly changing world.
