Shopian, Sept 18: In a unique effort to enhance voter turnout, the Shopian district administration in South Kashmir has honored first-time voters and those who arrived early at polling stations.
On Wednesday, a ceremony was held to award appreciation certificates and gifts to these dedicated voters as a token of recognition for their commitment to the democratic process. This initiative, introduced by District Election Officer (DEO) Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar, aimed to increase participation across the region.
Officials reported that the administration’s strategy involved providing incentives such as gift vouchers and certificates to motivate voters to cast their ballots promptly. The recognition was given to those who were among the first to arrive at polling stations and to first-time voters during the election campaign.
DEO Shopian also personally honoured some early and first-time voters at various polling stations.
Hazik Ahmad, a young voter from the Shopian constituency, expressed his excitement after casting his first vote. “This initiative made my voting experience truly memorable,” he said, following the receipt of his certificate and gift. Ahmad praised the district administration for its creative approach to encouraging voter engagement.
Similarly, Sanaullah Lone, an elderly resident from Trenz village in the Zainapora constituency, was recognized for being one of the earliest voters at his polling station. Lone, who received a certificate and gift, expressed his joy and urged fellow citizens to participate in the democratic process, emphasizing the significance of each vote.
In addition to voter recognition, the district media center and Municipality Committee Shopian installed LED screens at various locations to provide bi-hourly updates on polling percentages. Officials also disseminated polling statistics every two hours through social media platforms, keeping the public and media informed throughout the day.
