Srinagar, July 20: The Public Health Engineer (PHE) Division in Srinagar has appealed to the residents to conserve water and avoid using it for non-essential purposes such as watering lawns, kitchen gardens and washing vehicles due to a shortage in certain parts of the city, particularly in the tail-end areas.
Anbreen Anjum, Executive Engineer of the Water Works Division Srinagar, informed Rising Kashmir that the recent rise in temperatures across the Kashmir Valley has led to an increase in water consumption, causing shortages in some parts of Srinagar, especially the tail-end areas.
“The residents of Srinagar are urged to use drinking water wisely and avoid its misuse in lawns, kitchen gardens, and for washing vehicles,” Anjum said.
She requested consumers using direct online boosters to discontinue this practice immediately to ensure fair distribution of water supply in their respective areas. Such actions are considered an offence under the Jammu & Kashmir Water Resources Regulation and Management Act 2010, and the department will take action against violators, she said.
“For any complaints or concerns regarding water supply shortages, the general public can reach out to the PHE Provincial Control Room, which operates 24×7 to assist the public,” she added.
The Executive Engineer further said that Nodal Officers have been designated to address legitimate grievances related to water supply and will be available to assist the general public.
Meanwhile, an official at the PHE Division in Srinagar, highlighting the severity of the situation said, “As we witness a rise in temperatures, our city is facing a shortage of water in certain areas. This critical situation calls for urgent action from each one of us. It is imperative that we prioritise water conservation and refrain from using it for non-essential purposes.”
“Water is a precious resource, essential for life and livelihoods. By conserving water, we not only ensure its availability for basic needs but also contribute to the sustainability of our environment. Simple steps such as fixing leaks, using water-efficient appliances, and reducing unnecessary water use can make a significant difference,” he said.
“Let us all commit to being mindful of our water consumption. Public cooperation and responsible actions are crucial in conserving water during this time of need,” the official added.
