JAMMU, July 10: In a significant development, Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) detained several suspected Over Ground Workers (OGWs), from the higher reaches adjoining Machedi, Billawar, and other areas of Kathua on Wednesday. These detentions follow suspicions that the OGWs provided logistical and other support to terrorists who recently attacked an Army vehicle in the Machedi area.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kathua, Inayat Ali, confirmed the detentions to Rising Kashmir, stating, “We can’t say about exact numbers, but several suspects have been detained for questioning. More suspects, i.e., OGWs, will soon be detained as questioning from the already detained OGWs has been going on.”
Sources indicate that further detentions are likely based on disclosures obtained during the questioning of the current suspects.
The ambush on Monday resulted in the martyrdom of five brave soldiers, while five others sustained injuries when terrorists attacked their vehicle in the remote Machedi area of Billawar in Kathua district.
In response, the Army and Police launched a massive joint search operation on Tuesday across the areas adjoining Machedi to locate and apprehend the terrorists involved.
Intense and extensive joint operations are being conducted by seven teams from both the Army and the Police in various areas of Machedi and the surrounding Kathua district.
Top officials, including the Director General of Police (DGP) J&K Police, R.R. Swain, and Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Jammu Zone, Anand Jain, visited the ambush site by helicopter to review the ongoing search operations in Machedi and its surrounding areas.
