Srinagar, Apr 30: People’s Conference President Sajad Gani Lone on Tuesday urged the Union Territory administration to “go beyond” the SDRF, as recent floods have caused major damage to various areas of Kupwara and Handwara.
“SDRF won’t cover the losses caused to the horticulture sector in the districts,” Lone said, adding that he would write to the administration to help the affected families.
Speaking to reporters during his visit to north Kashmir, Sajad said such floods are reported in this area every two to three years. He stressed the need for sufficient staff with modern machinery to cater to the huge population.
“Such national disasters have been witnessed in the past,” he said and pledged that once he comes to power, he will ensure both manpower and machinery are sufficient in the district.
The JKPC chief also visited several areas of Handwara to meet the flood-affected families. He visited Bungam, Kultoora, Chogal, Kulgangam, and several areas of the Kupwara district and met with affected families. Lone requested the district administration to assist them.
The flash floods in the frontier district created havoc, damaging several infrastructures, and houses. Landslides were also reported, but there were no reports of any human loss. The administration said it evacuated around 336 families in the district, and 21 shelter homes were constructed for them.
After concluding his visit to the flood-affected areas of Kupwara, Sajad Lone addressed workers at his residence in Handwara, where DDC Member Kalaroose, Mustufa Rahie, joined the party along with hundreds of workers.
Addressing the workers, Sajad said if he comes to power, he will change the landscape of north Kashmir, which has great tourism potential. He urged people to give him a chance to go to parliament, promising to change their fate.
