Handwara, Oct 19: People’s Conference (PC) chairman and MLA, Handwara, Sajad Gani Lone on Saturday criticised the J&K government led by Omar Abdullah over its handling of Article 370 and “failure” to deliver on electoral promises.
In an exclusive interview with KNS, Lone said the abrogation of Article 370 is a matter of national concern, not merely a political issue. “Article 370 is a matter for the whole nation, not just for one individual. The resolution for statehood was passed in the cabinet, but it should have been voted on in the Assembly. This is not a time for point-scoring; we need clarity on who supports and opposes such crucial issues,” he said.
Sajad accused the government of using the Article 370 issue to “save someone” rather than taking meaningful legislative actions.
“There are grievances among the people, particularly concerning electricity bills, job shortages and unmet promises from the ruling party,” he said. “Wherever we go, people are asking when they will receive their Rs 5,000 pension or their free 200 units of electricity. Many don’t even have meters.”
The PC chief further condemned the government’s approach to job creation. “While they speak of new jobs, even the positions left vacant after retirements remain unfilled,” he said.
Lone also accused the National Conference (NC) of betraying the trust of the Kashmiri people. “The people trusted a party whose past is stained with blood. Kashmir has been stained with blood, yet we now see the leaders of those responsible for this bloodshed in positions of power,” he alleged.
He urged the public to remember these “failures” and to hold the government accountable for its actions. “This is what Allah will ask you in the hereafter,” he warned, asking voters to reflect on their choices.
Assuring the public of the People’s Conference’s commitment to advocacy, Lone said, “We will continue to stand by the people and ensure their voices are heard. We will fight for the promises that have been made to them.”
