SAC Meeting: KVK Gurez charts roadmap for socio-economic development of Dard tribe

Gurez, Sept 27: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Gurez on Saturday held its fourth Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting under the chairmanship of Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Kashmir. The meeting reviewed achievements and outlined future plans aimed at uplifting the socio-economic status of the Dard Tribe in Gurez Valley.As per a statement issued here, Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth, Director Extension SKUAST-Kashmir, attended as Member Secretary. The session saw active participation from district and sectoral heads of agriculture and allied departments, representatives of the lead bank, senior scientists, progressive farmers, farm women, entrepreneurs, NRLM and SHG members, alongside KVK Gurez staff including Dr. Jauhar Rafeeq, Dr. Riyaz Ahmad, Dr. Shahida, and Dr. Rafiq Ahmad. The meeting was co-hosted with the 19th SAC meeting of KVK Bandipora-I (Patushai). At the outset, Dr. Hilal Ahmad Malik, Head KVK/MAR&ES Gurez, presented the progress report for 2024–25 and unveiled the action plan for 2025–26. He highlighted achievements, extension initiatives, and proposed research activities. Head KVK Bandipora-I, Dr. Tariq Sultan, also presented his Kendra’s progress. Prof. Ganai praised KVK Gurez for conserving and reviving traditional crops such as Kala Zeera, Buckwheat, Potato, and Rajmash. He underscored the need for an Extension-based Research System (ERS) to enhance production, productivity, and profitability while ensuring a better quality of life for tribal farmers. He also urged greater adoption of organic farming and the conservation of medicinal and aromatic plants. Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth emphasised stronger synergy between KVKs and development departments for wider technology adoption and cluster-based outcomes. The meeting also featured the unveiling of SKUAST-K’s latest NIRF ranking, screening of a documentary prepared by KVK Gurez, and release of extension literature on thematic areas. In the feedback session, district and sectoral heads offered suggestions for future interventions. On the sidelines of the SAC, KVK Gurez organised interaction-cum-input distribution programmes under TSP-ICAR at Koragbal, Dawar, and Izmarg. MLA Gurez, Nazir Ahmad Khan (Gurezi), attended as Chief Guest and lauded the Kendra’s efforts. Notably, five units of genetically improved Gurezi sheep, developed by SKUAST-K under an ICAR project, were distributed to tribal farmers at Baduaab Tulail. Farmers expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, KVK scientists, and organisers, acknowledging KVK Gurez’s role in promoting sustainable agriculture and improving livelihoods in the remote tribal belt.
