Shopian, May 17: The Rugby District Championship, organized by the Rugby District Association Shopian, came to a thrilling close on Wednesday at the HomehonaNagbal Stadium. The two-day event, held on May 16th and 17th, saw an impressive participation of at least 20 teams from various schools and clubs across the district.
Under the banner of the J&K Rugby Association and sponsored by the J&K Sports Council, the championship aimed to promote the sport of rugby and provide a platform for talented young athletes in the region.
On the closing day, guests Shabir ah Malik, President of the Private School Association, and General Secretary of the J&K Rugby Association graced the occasion. They distributed medals and mementos among the deserving students and officials who demonstrated exceptional skills and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
In his address to the participants, Mr. Shabir ah Malik encouraged them to choose sports over drugs, emphasizing the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. He expressed gratitude to the managing body for organizing such events in remote areas of the Shopian district, ensuring that sports reach every corner of the region.
The championship witnessed remarkable performances from the competing teams, displaying their dedication and passion for the game. In the girls under 18 and under 14 categories, the Syngerea Islamic Institute ReshiporaZanipora claimed the coveted trophy. Meanwhile, the boys under 19 team from Cambridge Noorani Institute Nagbal emerged victorious, securing the championship trophy.
