Budgam. Sept 15: Rural Development department has undertaken various measures to implement the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Plan across 296 panchayats in the Budgam district.
Presently, 236 vehicles collect waste from the villages and transport it to waste collection centres and segregation sheds on a daily basis. The Rural Development Department has constructed 168 waste collection centres and segregation sheds in rural areas of the Budgam district.
The department has also constructed 236 community pits and 971 individual composite pits where people can dispose of biodegradable waste that can be turned into vermicompost which people can use in agricultural and horticultural lands.
As part of the home drainage system, 567 soak pits have been constructed to collect kitchen and bathroom water, keeping the environment free from pollution. Additionally, 1786 drainage systems have been constructed in rural areas of the Budgam district.
An official from the Rural Development department stated that Block Development Officers in the district have been given the power to fine those who violate Solid Waste Management rules by throwing garbage in various locations.
