Baramulla, Feb 06: The Department of PMGSY Uri has cleared a 2.5 km stretch of the Nambla-Silipathri road from snow after dispatching a snow clearing machine on Monday.
The road had been closed due to heavy snowfall in the upper reaches of Uri and Boniyar, leaving many of the upper villages disconnected from the main town of Uri.
The road clearance work was initiated on an emergency basis after the plight of the locals came to light, including a woman who had recently delivered twins and was carried by her family on her shoulders to her home in Silipathri Nambla.
Manzoor Ahmad Sheikh, the Executive Engineer of PMGSY Uri, said that the road clearance work has been initiated now owing to improved weather conditions in the area.
The 2.5 km Nambla-Silpathri road is located at a high altitude and passes through mountainous terrain.
The department of PMGSY had immediately cleared 1.6 km of the road following the snowfall, but the remaining length of the road was delayed due to landslides at different spots.
Sheikh added that the road surface had become extremely slippery due to its earthen status (Kaccha road), and extreme caution had to be taken to prevent any accidents.
He said that the remaining length of the road has now been cleared.
