Srinagar, Nov 20: Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory has experienced a worrisome increase in infiltration attempts over the past few months, leading to heightened vigilance and the implementation of robust security measures by the government and security forces, according to officials.
The latest media reports reveal that 42 terrorists have been killed this year alone while attempting to infiltrate the region, underscoring the persistent challenges faced by security personnel in maintaining the integrity of the Line of Control (LoC).
According to the security forces the most recent infiltration attempt incident occurred on November 15 in the Uri sector, where two unidentified terrorists were killed.
Police sources told KNS that October proved to be a particularly active month, with security forces “neutralizing five terrorists along the LoC in the Macchil sector of Kupwara district on October 26”.
Additionally, on October 22, two terrorists were killed in an unsuccessful infiltration bid in the Uri sector of Baramulla district, highlighting the persistent and varied nature of the security threats faced by the region.
The situation echoes a series of events in June, where a total of 11 infiltrators were killed.
Among them, four were neutralized in the Macchil sector, while five were eliminated in the nearby Jumagund area of the Keran sector.
Meanwhile sources told KNS that the government has directed security forces to heighten their vigilance on identified infiltration routes.
The recent surge in infiltration attempts has prompted a reassessment of security protocols, with an increased focus on leveraging intelligence inputs, deploying advanced surveillance technologies, and conducting regular patrols along vulnerable stretches of the LoC.
The objective is to create a strong deterrent against infiltrators and to swiftly neutralize any potential threats.
As the security forces gear up to implement these measures, there is a call for public cooperation, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may pose a threat to the peace and security of Jammu and Kashmir.
A high-ranking source within the MHA emphasised that troops have been instructed to maintain the highest possible vigilance along the International Border and Line of Control in key districts, including Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, Poonch, Baramulla, Kupwara, and others in the Union Territory.
“With winter approaching, terrorists may attempt infiltration. You need to take measures and beef up the counter-infiltration posture to handle the situation,” stated the MHA to the troops.
Sources told KNS that the Defence Ministry has directed the Army to remain on high alert.
“The Army and Border Security Forces have escalated patrolling efforts in mountainous valleys and riverine areas along the LoC in districts such as Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, and Rajouri to counteract potential infiltration” , said the sources.
A senior Army official highlighted that troops along the LoC are operating at the highest degree of alertness in response to the heightened risk of fresh infiltrations. (KNS)
