Jammu, July 12: J&K National Conference (JKNC) Additional General Secretary and Former Minister, Ajay Kumar Sadhotra on Friday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government must fulfill its commitment to restore full statehood to J&K before announcing assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir.
“Without statehood, elections will be meaningless for the people,” he said while addressing a public meeting at Tali Morh in Janipur under the Jammu North Constituency. He was accompanied by Babu Rampaul, President of JKNC Central Zone, and Ankush Abrol, JKNC Provincial Joint Secretary, among others.
The NC leader launched a scathing attack against the BJP-led Central government for implementing what he described as anti-people measures in Jammu and Kashmir. He accused the UT government of exacerbating hardships through increased charges for electricity, water and the imposition of property tax. “Instead of providing relief from unemployment and inflation, the government is burdening people further,” he said.
Sadhotra assured the audience that an NC government would reduce these charges and eliminate property tax to alleviate public suffering.
Highlighting the plight of widows, he condemned the discontinuation of widow pensions and criticised the “cumbersome” re-registration process, which he claimed was causing unnecessary distress.
Babu Rampaul affirmed NC’s unwavering support for the people of J&K and called for the restoration of their dignity through the reinstatement of full statehood.
Ankush Abrol addressed the issue of unemployment among youth, advocating for employment packages and financial assistance until they secure jobs or establish businesses. Dr Vikas Sharma urged the youth to become agents of political change and support NC’s leadership to address their concerns effectively.
Advocate Rajinder Chanyal and Bharat Bhushan also spoke at the meeting, highlighting the urgent need to redress grievances caused by ambiguous government policies. The event was attended by various NC leaders and supporters who echoed the call for restoring statehood and addressing the pressing issues faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
