Baramulla, May 15: The residents of villages living along the Gharkote Muhri to Kallar road in the Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district say they are experiencing severe hardships due to poor road conditions.
The road has been left unattended for over two kilometers, causing hardships for the entire population of the area, they said.
According to the residents, the macadamization work on the three-kilometer road starting from Gharkote Muhri to Kallar was initiated by the department of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) around three years ago.
“Although a portion of the road was macadamized, a major part of the road remains neglected. And it is in shambles,” said Irshad Ahmad, a local.
He said the transporters are worried as the muddy road causes obstacles in the smooth traffic movement, he added.
Another local Mushtaq Ahmad said that due to the extremely bad road conditions, the residents of several villages living along the three-kilometer road are unable to use their own vehicles as they get stuck in the mud.
Even ambulances are unable to ply over the road, forcing patients to be carried on shoulders, he said.
Meanwhile, apart from poor road conditions, the villagers whose land has been used to construct the road have not yet received compensation, despite repeated requests to the authorities. “We have not received compensation against our land which has been used for the construction of the road. The authorities must address our issue at the earliest,” said a local Ishtiyaq Ahmad.
When contacted, Assistant Executive Engineer, PMGSY Uri, Mohsin Janwari said that the road is under execution and the work will resume once there is improvement in weather conditions.
