Ganderbal, April 16: Residents of Wakura area in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district are facing immense difficulties due to the deteriorated state of the Dub Canal drain. Once a crucial source of drinking water and irrigation, the canal has now devolved into a stagnant, refuse-filled channel as a result of prolonged official apathy and unchecked blockages.
Locals recount how the canal, which once sustained both domestic use and agricultural needs, has become choked with garbage, silt and debris. “It is painful to see what this canal has become. If the government had acted in time, we wouldn’t be witnessing such a sorry state today,” said a resident.
The foul odour emanating from the canal and the accumulation of stagnant water have sparked serious health concerns, particularly with rising temperatures increasing the risk of waterborne diseases. Despite repeated pleas to the authorities, locals say no meaningful action has been taken. “We urge the district administration and the concerned departments to treat this as a priority issue. Wakura is suffering in silence,” another resident said.
The community fears that continued neglect could lead to long-term environmental damage and severe public health consequences. Residents are once again appealing for immediate intervention to clean and restore the canal, hoping the administration will not let their voices go unheard.
