Srinagar, Oct 7: The reopening of Kaman Post in north Kashmir’s Uri area, months after the Pahalgam terror attack, has brought a wave of relief and optimism among the locals and traders.

The post, situated at the final Indian military checkpoint before the Aman Setu bridge linking the two sides of divided Kashmir, had seen restricted movement and heightened security following the April attack.

J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, while chairing a Unified Headquarters (UHQ) meeting of multiple security agencies at Raj Bhawan in Srinagar on September 26, announced the reopening of 12 tourist spots that had been closed in the wake of the Pahalgam attack. Kaman Aman Setu was among them.

Welcoming the decision, Haji Mohammad Shafi, President of Beopar Mandal Uri, said the reopening of the Kaman Post for visitors is a commendable step by the government. “It will help local hotel and restaurant owners sustain their livelihoods,” he told Rising Kashmir.

He further urged the government to bring other scenic spots in Uri onto the tourism map. “That would create more employment opportunities for the youth,” he said.

Shabir Ahmad, a local walnut trader, said the reopening could also benefit traders in Lagama market. “If tourists come, they will stop here and buy walnuts from us. This will help us earn our livelihood,” he said.

“We are grateful to the Hon’ble LG for reopening this spot. It will give a much-needed boost to border tourism in the region,” added Abrar Bhat, a local RTI activist.
