Srinagar, Apr 22 : In a momentous occasion at the Civil Investiture Ceremony in New Delhi, the President of India bestowed the prestigious Padma Shri award upon GhulamNabi Dar for his exemplary contributions to the field of Art from Jammu and Kashmir.
GhulamNabi Dar, a septuagenarian artisan, has carved a distinguished niche for himself in the realm of wood carving, blending traditional techniques with his own innovative designs. His artistic journey commenced at the tender age of 10, fueled by an innate passion for working with wood.
Born on April 3rd, 1957, Dar’s craftsmanship blossomed as he drew inspiration from the enchanting landscapes of Kashmir, infusing his carvings with intricate details that mirror the region’s natural beauty. His exceptional talent garnered state recognition in 1984 and culminated in a National award in 1995-96, solidifying his status as a maestro in the art of wood carving.
Beyond his accolades, Dar remains committed to nurturing the next generation of artisans, actively mentoring aspiring wood carvers and participating in initiatives aimed at preserving Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage. His wood carvings adorn homes, galleries, and museums worldwide, serving as enduring testaments to his artistic brilliance.
GhulamNabi Dar’s legacy as a master wood carving artisan continues to enrich the cultural fabric of Kashmir and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the world of art.
