Srinagar, Jan 18: The Rural Development Department in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district has successfully established plastic waste management centres in 14 blocks to address the issue of plastic waste in rural areas. However, two more centres are expected to be completed during this financial year.
An official from the department told Rising Kashmir that the government has provided a total of 16 plastic waste management centres for all 16 blocks in Anantnag district. “Out of these, 14 centres have been completed and equipped with machines. The remaining two centres for the two blocks will be completed within this financial year,” he said.
“In addition, 219 segregation sheds have been allotted for the implementation of the solid waste management plan in rural areas of Anantnag. Out of these, 162 sheds have already been completed, and the remaining sheds will be fully completed within two months,” he added.
The official further said that 323 community composite pits have been allocated for the disposal of biodegradable waste out of which 162 composite pits have been completed. The decomposition of this waste in the pits produces fertilizers that can be used on agricultural land. This initiative aims to treat biodegradable waste in every village in the district.
To address the issue of grey water generated from kitchens and bathrooms, the official said that 602 community soak pits have been allocated. “Currently, 377 soak pits have been completed, allowing people to collect and dispose of grey water. This helps in preventing pollution of water bodies caused by the discharge of grey water,” he said.
Moreover, 125 community sanitary complexes have been allocated, out of which 70 have been completed, the official said, adding that efforts are underway to complete the remaining complexes as well.
Plastic waste management centres have emerged as crucial facilities aimed at mitigating the adverse impacts of plastic pollution on ecosystems. These centres serve as dedicated hubs for the collection, segregation, and proper disposal of plastic waste.
Equipped with advanced machinery and trained personnel, they play a pivotal role in ensuring the responsible handling of plastic materials. The primary objectives include reducing the environmental footprint of plastic pollution and promoting recycling initiatives.
