Kokernag, Jan 23: Anantnag Administration on Tuesday launched ‘RASTA – Roadside Assistance during Traffic Accidents’ initiative to offer training to residents and shopkeepers residing along main roads, aiming to equip them with the skills to provide first aid to the injured people.
This follows the “No Helmet, No Petrol” policy, a novel initiative by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Syed Fakhrudin Hamid’s administration in Anantnag.
DC Anantnag told Rising Kashmir that there are numerous initiatives in the pipeline to effectively eliminate the percentage of road accidents in the district. The District Administration has initiated this program to train residents and establishments along the roads across the district.
The training aims to equip them with the necessary skills to act as first aid givers during the ‘Golden Hour Period.’ Medical kits shall be distributed among all such trained volunteers/SAMARITANS.
The idea is to administer timely medical aid which can save the life of an accident victim. Referred to as the ‘golden hour,’ the first hour following a trauma is crucial.
“We should drive or ride our vehicles responsibly, abiding by the law. Ensure proper documentation, use of helmets, seat belts, and other measures to support the initiative and save precious lives,” he said.
He said the volunteers would be provided with basic medical and first aid knowledge as it is essential to be aware of the proper procedures and precautions. Improper handling can sometimes worsen the situation.
“This is a crucial step in reducing the death rate from accidents and moving towards saving precious lives. With the support of the public, our aim is to transform Anantnag district into an accident-free zone,” he added.
Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Kokernag Syed Suheel Lone said, on the directions of the District Administration, the initiative was formally launched. The aim was to provide training to roadside shopkeepers about the basic procedures given to individuals involved in accidents.
“We roped in the doctors, and they provided the necessary information about first aid and guided the locals about Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The program was attended by dozens of locals and shopkeepers,” he said, adding that more programmes will be held.
Earlier, the District Administration in Anantnag received widespread appreciation for its “No Helmet, No Fuel” policy, which was subsequently adopted and amplified by other districts as well.
