JAMMU, Oct 13:Two newly elected BJP MLAs, Devender Rana and Sunil Sharma, have emerged as top contenders for the position of Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the new Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, party sources said.
Rana secured a resounding victory in the Nagrota Assembly constituency, winning with a record margin, while Sunil Sharma was re-elected for a second consecutive term. Both leaders are considered strong candidates to lead the party’s legislative team.
The BJP’s Parliamentary Board has appointed Union Minister Prahalad Joshi and National General Secretary Tarun Chugh as Central Observers to oversee the election of the Leader of Opposition.
Sources indicate that the BJP legislative party meeting, likely to take place by October 15 at the party’s head office in Trikuta Nagar, Jammu, will decide the appointment. All 29 newly elected BJP MLAs have been summoned to attend the meeting, where discussions on the leadership position will be held.
The BJP achieved its best-ever performance in the recently concluded Assembly elections, making a clean sweep in the Jammu region by winning 29 out of the total 43 seats, marking the highest tally in the party’s history in Jammu and Kashmir.
