Srinagar, May 22: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is likely to visit Poonch on May 24 to meet the families affected by recent violence and assess the situation in the region.
Confirming the development, senior J&K Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir told Rising Kashmir that while final minute-to-minute details are awaited, Rahul Gandhi is expected to visit Poonch and possibly other affected areas near the Line of Control.
“He has to go to Poonch. In fact, there are more casualties and damage reported there,” Mir said.
When asked about a visit to Kashmir, Mir said it was considered earlier, but due to ongoing security concerns and ongoing sanitization following recent shelling, such a plan may not go ahead.
“To take any VVIP to that level, proper security clearance is needed,” he said.
He added that if all goes as expected, Gandhi will leave for Poonch the day after tomorrow.
The visit is being seen as a show of solidarity with the victims of cross-border violence and is part of Congress’s wider outreach in Jammu and Kashmir.
