Srinagar, Jan 25: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making the region a hub of development and opportunity, emphasizing that development is the cornerstone of J&K’s bright future.
In his Republic Day address, Sinha acknowledged the sacrifices of freedom fighters and martyrs, stressing that the 76th Republic Day was an occasion to honour their legacy, reflect on the values enshrined in the Constitution, and reaffirm the commitment to justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
“J&K has always been a land of diversity and brotherhood. Preserving peace and harmony is critical to realizing the aspirations of our youth and ensuring divisive forces do not impede their dreams,” the Lieutenant Governor stated.
He highlighted that good governance is the backbone of development, with transparent and citizen-centric policies being implemented to strengthen public trust and promote inclusive growth. Notable digital governance initiatives, such as the e-Unnat portal and JK SAMADHAN platform, are streamlining services and bridging gaps, he added.
The LG also noted significant progress in Jammu and Kashmir’s economy which has recorded a growth rate of 9.5%, driven by sustained government initiatives and strategic policy measures. GSDP of J&K is estimated at ₹2.45 lakh crore for 2023-24, up from ₹2,20 lakh crore in 2022-23. This positive trajectory highlights the effectiveness of ongoing economic development strategies, infrastructure advancements, and business-friendly policies.
Infrastructure development, he said, remains a top priority, with major projects like the Z-Morh and Zojila tunnels, Srinagar Ring Road, and national highways improving connectivity. The ongoing railway project, he noted, will integrate the Valley with the national network.
Sinha assured that the government is committed to providing 100% household water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission, with 81% coverage already achieved and efforts underway to reach the remaining households, ensuring clean and accessible water for all.
In agriculture and horticulture, the LG highlighted programs like the Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP), which is aimed at creating a sustainable and diversified farming economy benefiting over 3 lakh households.
Sinha also noted a rise in industrial development, with new policies and investments driving growth. The J&K Startup Policy 2024-27 and the establishment of PM Ekta Malls are empowering local artisans and promoting entrepreneurship, with a focus on creating 2,000 startups by 2027.
Tourism in J&K, he added, is witnessing an unprecedented boost, with record-breaking visitor numbers and new initiatives to promote alternate destinations. Upcoming projects like a water park near Sidhra Golf Course and adventure tourism in Basohli are expected to further elevate the region’s tourism sector.
