Srinagar, April 01: In the holy month of Ramadan, the prices of fruits, vegetables, meat, and chicken have gone up in the markets throughout the Kashmir valley.
The people have criticized the authorities for their failure to monitor the market prices which have resulted in consumers having to purchase fruits, vegetables, chicken, and meat at higher rates.
Aliya Manzoor, a resident of Srinagar city expressed her concern about the exorbitant prices of fruits and vegetables at the Batamalloo market.
According to her, since the start of the holy month of Ramadan, the shopkeepers have been arbitrarily raising the prices of essential commodities without any regulation.
She lamented the lack of authority to intervene and control these vendors who are selling these items at inflated rates.
Javid Ahmad, a resident of the Pattan area said he bought 1 kilogram of lemons for Rs 200 and 1.50 kilograms of chicken for Rs 279 from the Magam market in the Budgam district.
During normal days, he used to purchase 1 kilogram of lemons for Rs 120 from the same market.
“When we ask the shopkeepers why you are selling these items at these rates, they are telling us to visit another shop,” he said.
The customers have expressed dissatisfaction regarding their concerns being ignored, as the department has failed to take any action in response to the public outcry
President of Parimpora fruit Mandi Srinagar, Bashir Ahmed Basheer said they are selling the fruits and vegetables at normal rates.
