Srinagar, Feb 28: The 2025 edition of the Srinagar Heritage Festival ‘Soan Meeraas’ kicked off today at Kashmir Haat, with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha attending the event to celebrate the rich cultural legacy of Jammu and Kashmir. The festival, a collaborative initiative between the District Administration Srinagar and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), serves as a platform to honour the region’s artisans, folk artists, and writers, while also promoting the revival and preservation of the unique cultural heritage of the Union Territory.
In his address, Lieutenant Governor Sinha emphasised the importance of fostering a deeper connection between the youth and the region’s traditional arts. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering artisans and the cultural community, asserting that their welfare and growth remain central to the government’s objectives. “Our goal is to ensure that every child in J&K connects with their roots, while empowering the youth to use the legacy of our artisans to contribute to the region’s economic growth,” he stated.
The Lieutenant Governor also underscored the role of well-planned government policies in uplifting the artistic community, citing the positive impact of these initiatives over the past four years. He further expressed pride in Srinagar’s growing status as the cultural heart of Jammu and Kashmir, a transformation supported by the integration of ancient traditions with modern infrastructure.
In addition to his speech, the Lieutenant Governor released the book “Iconic Women of J&K” and felicitated students and artists who participated in the festival, acknowledging their vital role in preserving the region’s heritage. His visit also included a tour of various cultural exhibitions, live sports demonstrations, and a Traditional Village showcasing the diversity and vibrancy of J&K’s cultural landscape.
Held across key locations including the Jhelum Riverfront, Dal Lake, and Kashmir Haat, the festival aims to foster community cohesion, celebrate local traditions, and provide a memorable experience for participants and visitors alike.
