Srinagar, Apr 18: Political leaders expressed sorrow and heartfelt condolences on the demise of prominent Shia scholar Allama Agha Syed Mohammad Baqir Al-Moosvi, who breathed his last in the early hours of Friday, April 18, 2025, at SMHS Hospital, SrinAghar. He was 85.
National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah in his condolence message highlighted the scholar’s significant contributions to religious thought and emphasised his dedication to promoting social harmony.
Dr Faooq acknowledged that the legacy of the late Agha will be cherished for generations to come. He offered prayers for peace for his departed soul and strength for his grieving family and followers.
NC General Secretary Ali Muhammad SAghar, Additional General Secretary Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, Party Treasurer Shammi Oberoi, Party MP Mian Altaf Ahmad, MLA’s Ali Mohammad Dar, Dr Mohammad Shafi, Saifuddin Bhat and other party functionaries from north, south, and central zones also expressed their condolences to the Agha household, particularly Agha Syed Mahmood and Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, on the passing of Agha Syed Muhammad Bakir Moosvi.
The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and MLA Charar-e-Sharief, Abdul Rahim Rather in his heartfelt message of condolence highlighted the profound impact of Al-Moosvi’s contributions to religious thought and emphasised his unwavering commitment to fostering social harmony.
Recognising that the late Agha’s legacy will endure for generations to come, Rather offered prayers for peace for his departed soul and strength for his mourning family and followers.
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti in her condolence paid rich tributes to Allama Baqir, describing him as “not just a scholar but a beacon of knowledge, piety, and moral guidance.” She said his demise marks the end of an era of profound religious scholarship, spiritual leadership, and community service in Jammu and Kashmir.
Extending her heartfelt condolences to Agha Syed Hassan Mosavi Al-Safavi, his nephew and a prominent religious figure, Mufti expressed solidarity with the bereaved Agha family and members of Anjuman-e-Sharie Shian, a key religious organisation to which Allama Baqir was closely associated.
“May Allah Tallah grant the departed soul the highest place in Jannat and give strength to the bereaved family during this difficult time,” the PDP chief prayed, emphasising that his legacy would continue to inspire generations to come.
Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hameed Karra expressed profound grief over the demise and expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and relatives of the late Agha. Karra prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and courage to the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss.
People’s Conference (PC) chairman Sajad Lone also extended his condolences, stating, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Allama Agha Syed Mohammad Baqir Al-Moosavi Al-Najfi of Budgam. A revered scholar and guide. May Allah SWT elevate his ranks and grant him Jannat al-Firdous (Ameen).”
“Allama Moosavi was regarded as a pillar of wisdom and guidance for many in the Shia community and beyond. His teachings and efforts to uphold unity and peace will be remembered with high regard,” Lone said.
Apni Party leaders also expressed grief and sorrow over the demise. The party chief Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari termed the passing of Allama a tremendous loss for the Muslim community of Kashmir.
He wrote on his X handle, “Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon. The passing of Allama Agha Syed Baqir Al Safvi Najafi marks the end of an era. He will always be remembered for his profound contributions as a distinguished religious scholar and revered leader. His teachings and wisdom will continue to inspire and guide people for generations to come.”
He further said, “This is a tremendous loss, especially for the Muslim community of Kashmir. May Almighty Allah grant his soul the highest place in Jannah.”
The other prominent party leaders who have expressed their grief and sorrow over the passing of Agha, included party’s Senior Vice President Ghulam Hassan Mir, Chairman of the party’s Parliamentary Affairs Committee Mohammad Dilawar Mir, General Secretary Rafi Ahmad Mir, Provincial President Mohammad Ashraf Mir, Additional General Secretary Hilal Ahmad Shah, Media Advisor Farooq Andrabi, Chief Spokesperson Muntazir Mohiuddin, Provincial Secretary Najeeb Naqvi, Provincial Vice President Syed Muzaffar Rizvi, Provincial Secretary Jammu Aijaz Kazmi, Party Leader Syed Muzamil Rizvi, Party Leader Tanveer Hussain Pathan, and others.
Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen, president of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) and former minister, in his condolence message, Hakeem Yaseen hailed the late scholar as a towering figure of faith, intellect, and service. “Allama Al-Moosavi’s unparalleled contributions to religious discourse, interfaith harmony, and public welfare in Jammu and Kashmir have left an indelible mark,” he said.
Hakeem noted that the revered cleric was a beacon of unity whose teachings inspired generations across communities. “His demise is a monumental loss not just to the Shia community but to all who value peace, wisdom, and spiritual integrity,” he said.
