Srinagar, Aug 30: Several political leaders have urged the LG administration to expedite the probe into the mysterious death of engineer Gurmeet Singh and expressed sympathy with the bereaved family.
The body of Singh who went missing last week, was found on Tuesday in the Jhelum river in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Tuesday morning.
Chairman Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) Ghulam Nabi Azad described Gurmeet Singh as a dedicated and honest officer who always served people selflessly.
Urging Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to intervene, the former chief minister demanded a speedy probe into the death of AEE and ascertain the facts and details regarding Gurmeet’s death.
“I spoke to Deputy Commissioner Baramulla who assured me that justice would be done in the case as I sought a speedy probe into the mysterious death of Gurmeet Singh,” Azad said and urged people to maintain harmony which is the hallmark of Kashmiriyat.
Azad also condoled the demise of former Imam Khateeb of Dargah Hazratbal, Syed Ahmad Farooqi who passed away on Monday. In a condolence statement, Azad eulogised the role of former Imam Khateeb in disseminating his knowledge on all facets of Islam and expressed sympathy with his family and in particular current Imam of Dargah Kamaal Farooqi, who is elder brother Syed Ahmad.
Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference (JKPC) President Sajad Gani Lone also urged the authorities to initiate a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of engineer Gurmeet Singh.
“Engineer Gurmeet Singh’s sudden and mysterious death has left us all in shock and sorrow. His contributions as a dedicated professional and his presence in the community will be deeply missed. Our thoughts remain with his family, and we share their grief during this painful time. May his soul rest in peace,” the PC President said in a statement.
Lone urged the authorities to initiate a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. “We stand in solidarity with Engineer Gurmeet Singh’s family and friends and demand that every effort be made to uncover the truth. It is imperative that the investigation is transparent and expeditious, ensuring that all aspects are carefully examined to bring clarity to this unfortunate event. The community and the family deserve to know the truth behind this tragedy”, he added.
The civil society members from all sections of society in Jammu organised a candlelight march to pay tribute to Gurmeet Singh. The candle march started from Gurudwara Santpura Guru Nanak Nagar to Khalsa Chowk in Jammu where hundreds of civil society members participated. JKPCC Working President Raman Bhalla also joined the march.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhalla extended his deepest sympathies to Singh’s family, friends, and colleagues during this time of grief. He demanded a high-level investigation to find out the cause of the death.
“Since the whole issue is fishy, only a probe by CBI will settle the nerves of the Sikh community as a whole and the bereaved family in particular,” Bhalla said and urged the LG administration to expedite the probe into the mysterious death.
Jammu and Kashmir National Conference delegation visited Baramulla and expressed their sympathies with the family of Gurmeet Singh. They delegation appreciated the intense and comprehensive search operation by SDRF, canine squad and drone surveillance that led to the finding of the body of Gurmeet Singh from a barrage in Lower Jhelum Hydel Project.
