Ganderbal, Oct 29: Police on Sunday apprehended a gang of pickpockets operating in the vicinity of the Sub District Hospital Kangan in Ganderbal district.
The gang, which had been causing distress to local residents, was brought to justice through a well-executed operation, a police official said.
He said that in response to multiple reports from concerned citizens, the Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ganderbal, Nikhil Borkar, issued orders to assemble a dedicated police team. The team, led by Inspector Turk Zahoor, the Station House Officer of PS Kangan, and supervised by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Kangan, took immediate action.
Setting a trap in the bustling Kangan market, the police, aided by reliable sources, successfully captured three individuals, identities withheld, in the act of picking the pocket of an innocent passerby, Bashir Ahmed Mir, a resident of Hariganiwan. “Despite the trio’s attempt to flee the scene with stolen cash amounting to Rs 25,000, the police demonstrated their tact and apprehended all three suspects. The stolen money was promptly recovered and seized as evidence,” the official said.
He said a case FIR No. 118/2023 has been registered at Police Station Kangan and further investigation is underway.
“The general public has expressed its appreciation for the Ganderbal Police’s swift response in curbing the criminal activities of the pickpocket gang,” the official said, adding, “The police authorities encourage citizens to promptly report any suspicious activities, ensuring that potential culprits can be effectively apprehended in the future.”
