Bijbehara, Dec 25: In response to social media reports and a formal complaint, police arrested a person in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district for allegedly extorting money from people through online threats and intimidation.
A police spokesperson said Saqib Bashir Ganai, a resident of the Rakh Moman area of Bijbehara in Anantnag has been arrested for allegedly cheating and intimidating people for illegal monetary gain.
“He (Saqib) has been cheating and intimidating people to illegally extort money from them. Legal action has been initiated against him and a case FIR No. 294/2023 under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Bijbehera,” he said.
“Citizens are urged to exercise caution while using the internet and social media apps. In case of grievances, the police advise approaching them directly for appropriate legal action rather than resorting to social media,” the spokesperson said.
Online extortion refers to the act of using digital platforms to intimidate, threaten, or coerce individuals into paying money, usually by exploiting sensitive information or employing fear tactics.
