Srinagar, Feb 23: In a major crackdown against drug peddlers in Police District (PD) Handwara, the police have arrested 14 drug peddlers in the ensuing month of February and also recovered 2.5 kg of charas and 24 grammes of brown sugar, in addition to seizing cash and vehicles.
As per the details available with Rising Kashmir, Qalamabad and Kralgund police stations have arrested four drug peddlers equally this month so far and recovered 1.5 kg and 720 grammes of charas, respectively. Similarly, three drug peddlers have been arrested in Langate, followed by two in Villgam.
SP Handwara Sheema Nabi told Rising Kashmir, “Around 50 persons were detained under preventive laws and were provided counseling.” Also, five people were sent to drug de-addiction centers. In addition, many medical camps with a drug de-addiction focus were organised in every police station and police post in Handwara.
According to the police, on February 4, Qalamabad police arrested four drug peddlers and seized 720 grammes of charas and 4,500 rupees in cash from their possession.
On February 7, police station Kralgund claimed to have arrested a man with 1.5 kg of charas; similarly, on February 12, they claimed to have arrested two more peddlers and recovered 13 grammes of brown sugar from them. On February 18, police in Ananwan Kralgund arrested two peddlers with 11 grammes of brown sugar; 24,000 rupees in cash and a motorcycle were also seized from their possession.
On February 19, a team from the police post Langate arrested a man in Tulwari and recovered 110 grammes of charas from his possession. On February 20, police arrested two drug peddlers in Rasipora, Kralgund, and recovered 480 grammes of charas and 385 banned tablets of Tapentadol.
Similarly, on February 14, police station Villagam stated they had nabbed one drug peddler during a naka at Tarartpora and recovered 30 grammes of brown sugar from his possession.
In a recent crackdown against drug peddlers, police in Magam on Wednesday arrested one person at Khanpora, Magam, and recovered 100 grammes of charas from his possession.
SP Handwara also said the people in Handwara are very supportive when it comes to eradicating drugs from Handwara town.
Meanwhile, people in Handwara town have hailed the police crackdown against the drug peddlers here and hoped the action would be continued to eradicate drugs from the town completely.
