Police bust drug module in Sopore; 3 held with contraband substances

Sopore, Jan 22: Three persons were arrested along with a huge consignment of drugs in the Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district after a truck was interrupted by police, officials said.
Addressing the media persons, Sub Divisional Police Officer Sopore, Dr Raies Ahmed Mir said that on January 11, 2024, Police Station Tarzoo established a naka at Railway Crossing Amargarh. “During the Naka checking, a truck bearing registration number JK05C 1271 was intercepted. During the search, 3600 capsules of Spasmoproxyvon plus were recovered from a bag from the said vehicle,” he said.
SDPO Sopore said that during preliminary questioning, the driver disclosed his identity as Rameez Wali Rather, son of Wali Mohammad Rather, resident of Sahipora Kralgund Handwara. Rather also disclosed that he has given a consignment to a person namely Shahnawaz Ahmed Shah, he added.
“Acting swiftly on his disclosure, this police station nabbed Shahnawaz Ahmed @ Manzoor, son of Shuja Ahmed, resident of Dangerpora Sopore, with 744 Spasmo Proxyvon plus capsules from his possession,” the officer said.
SDPO said that on questioning, the driver further disclosed that he had given some quantity of that contraband to a person namely Shabir Ahmed, son of Abdul Rashid Mir, resident of Sahipura, Kralgund, Handwara whom police apprehended nearby Dangerpora Sopore with a quantity of 792 Spasmo Proxyvon plus capsules.
A total number of 5136 capsules of spasmo proxyvon plus were successfully recovered, Dr Raies said, adding, “In this regar, a case FIR no 04/2024 u/s 8/21/22/29 of NDPS act registered in police station Tarzoo and further investigation is going on.”
SDPO said they have intensified efforts to combat drug-related crimes with a comprehensive approach, involving strict law enforcement measures and community engagement. “We are expecting more arrests in the case and it is still under investigation,” he said, adding that during the investigation, it surfaced that a seized truck was used for the transportation of drugs in the district for the past several years.
