NC ready to participate in Panchayat polls, flags concerns over shrine infrastructure at Charar-e-Shareef, Pakherpora

Srinagar, May 05: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday said the people’s mandate in the recently declared election results across four states and one Union Territory must be respected, expressing hope that the newly elected governments would prioritise public welfare.

Speaking to reporters at Charar-e-Sharief in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, Abdullah said the will of the people was clear and must be accepted by all stakeholders. “New governments have come in; may they work for the welfare of the people. This nation belongs to all of us, and it must be nurtured in a way that ensures progress for everyone,” he said.

On the upcoming Panchayat elections, Abdullah stated that the National Conference is prepared to take part and is awaiting the official notification. He described Panchayats as a crucial pillar of democracy, emphasising their role in strengthening governance and enabling development at the grassroots level.

Addressing local issues, Abdullah raised concerns over the condition of the Khanqah at Charar-e-Sharief. He said the project had been initiated during his tenure in 1996 but alleged that subsequent alterations had weakened the structure. According to him, substandard construction and design flaws have rendered the first floor unsafe for offering prayers.

He added that despite recommendations from experts, necessary corrective measures were not implemented. Urging the current administration to take immediate action, Abdullah called for proper renovation and completion of the unfinished Khanqah project.

The NC leader also highlighted infrastructure concerns at the Pakherpora shrine, noting that the ground near the newly constructed mosque requires urgent attention to facilitate devotees.
