Srinagar, Sept 23: Pencak Silat, a traditional martial art with Indonesian roots, is gaining significant traction in rural areas of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), particularly among girls. This development highlights the growing influence of martial arts as a tool for empowerment, discipline, and self-defense, especially in regions where opportunities for physical education and self-expression have historically been limited.
For rural children, especially girls in J&K, participation in sports like Pencak Silat is more than just a way to stay fit—it’s a form of empowerment. It gives them confidence, teaches self-defense, and promotes physical and mental well-being. In many areas of J&K, where social norms and economic challenges often limit girls’ participation in physical activities, Pencak Silat is breaking barriers.
Khelo India centres, Pencak Silat sports association and j&k sports council programs are playing a key role in making martial arts training accessible to these communities. The sport’s emphasis on discipline and respect resonates deeply with traditional values, while its practical benefits in terms of self-protection make it particularly appealing in areas where safety concerns may be prevalent.
The success of girls from rural areas in J&K in Pencak Silat tournaments—both at the national and international levels—has also brought attention to the sport as a promising avenue for talent development.
