Srinagar, June 10: The Pencak Silat Championship, organized by the J&K Pencak Silat Association in association with the J&K Sports Council, concluded successfully in Shopian district on Saturday. The two-day championship, held at Cambridge Noorani Educational Institution in Nagbal, witnessed the participation of around 200 athletes across various age groups.

The event aimed to not only showcase the skills of the participants but also identify talented individuals who could represent the district in upcoming competitions throughout the year. The enthusiasm and competitive spirit displayed by the athletes during the championship were commendable.

In a parallel development, eight trainees, including five girls, from the Khelo India Hockey Centre in Poonch have been selected to participate in the 66th National School Games to be held in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. This achievement highlights the growing talent pool in the region and their ability to compete at the national level.

Additionally, the revival of lawn tennis activities at the M.A. Stadium Sports Complex in Jammu has attracted a surge of children eager to participate. The refurbished facility has become a hub of activity, with children and parents alike enjoying the sport. This renewed interest in lawn tennis is seen as a positive step towards promoting sports and nurturing future athletes in the J&K region.

The J&K Boxing Association recently conducted selection trials for the 6th Youth Men National Boxing Championship, which will be held in Gantok, Sikkim. The trials, held at the M.A. Stadium in Jammu, saw the participation of aspiring boxers, with the selection committee and Sports Council officials present to monitor the process.

Furthermore, the Sports Council Football Academy at TRC Astro turf has experienced a surge in attendance for its weekend football school classes. The academy’s high-performance center focuses on training and coaching scouted talent, providing them with rigorous training to help them excel in the sport.

In Pulwama district, the Khelo India center in Bhajwani Tral has initiated a special training segment for children from peripheral areas. The program aims to foster a strong sports culture at the grassroots level by identifying talent, organizing structured sporting competitions, and developing necessary infrastructure.

Simultaneously, a gymnastics coaching camp is being conducted at the M.A. Stadium complex to prepare children for upcoming national events, emphasizing the holistic development of athletes in various disciplines.

The culmination of the Pencak Silat Championship and the ongoing sporting activities in different parts of J&K reflect the positive impact of expanding sports infrastructure and providing incentives for sports. These initiatives continue to contribute to the vibrant sports ecosystem of Jammu and Kashmir, nurturing talent and promoting a healthier and more active lifestyle among its residents.
