Pays tributes to Shaheed Sheikh Mansoor on death anniversary

Srinagar, May 11:  Jammu and Kashmir National Conference senior leader and Minister Sakina Masood Itoo on Monday accused the People's Democratic Party of repeatedly acting as the BJP’s “political cushion” in Jammu and Kashmir, alleging that both parties were raising “manufactured issues” to remain politically relevant.

Itoo was speaking at a commemorative event held at Circuit House Shopian, where floral tributes and Fateha were offered to veteran Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader Shaheed Sheikh Muhammad Mansoor on his 36th martyrdom anniversary. Accusing PDP and BJP of maintaining a covert “political understanding”, Sakina said both parties continue to raise “manufactured non-issues” to remain politically relevant.

Sakina said the growing public support for the government led by Omar Abdullah had left the PDP and BJP politically unsettled.

“The Omar government, despite challenges, is focusing on governance, welfare and accountability. Initiatives like free bus rides for women, academic calendar rationalisation, administrative reforms and strengthening of public services have restored public confidence,” she said.

The minister also accused the PDP of betraying the 2014 public mandate through its alliance with the BJP and criticised the party over issues including the 2016 unrest, implementation of GST and SARFAESI, and alleged backdoor appointments during its tenure.

Addressing the gathering, NC spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar accused PDP president Mehbooba Mufti of resorting to “fearmongering and political theatrics” instead of playing the role of a constructive opposition.

He alleged that PDP had repeatedly acted as a “silent enabler” of the BJP’s agenda in Jammu and Kashmir and said people had not forgotten the party’s alliance with the BJP.

During the event, Sakina Itoo also remembered Sheikh Muhammad Mansoor as a leader committed to democracy, secularism and public service, saying his sacrifices formed an important part of the National Conference’s political legacy.

Earlier, a Majlis-e-Fateha Khawani was held at the martyr’s resting place where party leaders and workers paid homage to Sheikh Mansoor.
