Kulgam, Dec 25: Online gambling is emerging as a dangerous trend, luring many, especially the youth, into its trap under the illusion of easy money.
Unfortunately, most end up losing their hard-earned savings, says tech expert Nafi Javaid.

Nafi Javaid, a 26-year-old resident of Wanpora, Kulgam, has been creating tech-related content since 2021. Known for exposing scams through his tech channel, he is now raising awareness about the growing menace of online gambling.
“Gambling has always existed, but it used to be offline. Many families were destroyed due to offline gambling. Now, the problem has transitioned online, making it even more dangerous,” Nafi said.
He said that online gambling is more addictive because it provides anonymity. In offline gambling, people knew who the gamblers were, and there was social pressure. Now, with mobile phones, people can gamble anytime, anywhere—whether in their car or late at night,” he said.
Nafi said that online gambling apps deceive users with visually appealing designs and engaging gameplay. “Today’s youth think they can change their destiny with the push of a button. Some are driven by greed, while others by desperation. They don’t realize they’re falling into a trap until it’s too late,” he added.
According to Nafi, “These games are designed to feel like harmless fun, and virtual transactions make it harder for users to grasp the money they’re losing. The thrill of earning small amounts, like Rs 500, entices their friends to try it too, creating a ripple effect.”
He said that there is a role of social media and influencer promotions in promoting online gambling. “Celebrities and influencers endorsing these apps mislead young people, making them believe it’s a quick way to earn money,” Nafi said.
“There’s a saying, ‘The house always wins.’ Whether offline or online, 99% of people lose in gambling. These shortcuts to success don’t work. No one has ever become a millionaire through gambling,” he warned.
Nafi urged the government to take strict measures to ban online gambling in Jammu and Kashmir, as has been done in other states. “This is my personal appeal to the government: online gambling and betting must be banned immediately to protect our youth,” he concluded.
He said that the shortcuts like gambling lead to nowhere. Instead, he encourages young people to focus on hard work and sustainable paths to success.
