Kulgam, May 30: The Legal Metrology Department (LMD) in Kulgam on Thursday imposed a penalty of Rs one lakh on a Samba-based LPG bottling plant for supplying underweight LPG cylinders for public distribution through retailers.
An official said that the field executives of the Legal Metrology Department, under the supervision of the Assistant Controller, Legal Metrology, Kulgam, intercepted a consignment of 324 domestic LPG cylinders en route to the godown of a local gas agency in Kulgam.
He said that during the surprise inspection, the gas cylinders were found to be underweight. The consignment was immediately seized, and a case was registered against the Samba-based supplier.
“Subsequently, the registered case was compounded for a sum of one lakh rupees as per the relevant sections of the Legal Metrology Act. The seized cylinders were released to be returned to the supplier for rectification before being supplied for public distribution, with strict instructions to avoid such malpractice in the future,” said, adding that failure to comply would result in severe action as warranted under law against the erring parties.
He said that earlier, Controller Legal Metrology Department J&K, Majid K.A Drabu, had issued directions for the field executives of LMD to conduct special inspection drives against LPG dealers in accordance with the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, and LPG Regulation (Supply and Distribution Order) 2000.
