Says top party meet focused on strengthening organisation No question of any MLAs leaving the party : Tanvir Sadiq

Srinagar, May 7: National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Thursday told party legislators and senior leaders that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was “walking on a sword’s edge” while trying to deliver on promises made to the people amid the challenges posed by Jammu and Kashmir’s present Union Territory status.

The remarks came during the Kashmir province working committee meeting of the National Conference held at the party headquarters, Nawa-e-Subh complex in Srinagar. The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, all NC MLAs from Kashmir province and senior party functionaries and chaired by NC chief. The meeting comes close on the heels of Chief Minister Omar's statement that he "wanted to burst like a cloudburst but has to wait till Eid....."

According to reliable sources present in the meeting, Dr Farooq acknowledged the difficulties being faced by the Omar Abdullah-led government in the prevailing administrative setup and urged legislators to strengthen the hands of the Chief Minister.

“Dr Farooq told party legislators that Omar is walking on a sword’s edge and trying his best to deliver in the prevailing circumstances,” a senior party source said, referring to Jammu and Kashmir functioning as a Union Territory instead of a full-fledged state. “He sought full support from MLAs and party leaders to help the government fulfil promises made to the people.”

The meeting, described by the party leadership as the “highest body meeting” of the Kashmir province unit, focused on organisational matters, governance and developmental issues across the Valley. Legislators are learnt to have shared feedback from their constituencies regarding developmental bottlenecks, public grievances and administrative issues requiring intervention.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Dr Farooq Abdullah said the session provided an opportunity for party leaders to discuss ways to strengthen the organisation further.

“It was the party’s highest body meeting. Everybody presented their views on how to strengthen the National Conference further,” he said.

On the INDIA bloc, Dr Farooq dismissed speculation about differences within the opposition alliance and asserted that it continued to remain active.

“The INDIA bloc has always been operative and it will continue to operate,” he said.

NC chief spokesman Tanvir Sadiq said the meeting discussed both organisational affairs and the developmental agenda of the Omar Abdullah-led government.

“Today, we held a Kashmir province working committee meeting of the party. We discussed organisational matters. We discussed the developmental agenda of Omar Abdullah-led government,” Sadiq told reporters.

“We also listened to MLAs wherever they are facing difficulties with regard to development across the Valley,” he added.

Sadiq said party legislators also discussed areas where people were facing difficulties and where governance loopholes could be addressed.

“It was also discussed where people are facing difficulties and where there are loopholes that could be fixed. This was purely an organisational meeting,” he said.

Rejecting reports that some NC legislators were unhappy or disappointed, Sadiq termed such speculation baseless and accused political opponents of attempting to spread rumours.

“These are baseless reports and it is the handiwork of NC’s enemies to spread such rumours,” he said. On the possibility of a cabinet expansion, Sadiq maintained that the matter rested entirely with the Chief Minister. “It is the sole prerogative of the Chief Minister and whenever he feels, he will do it,” he said.
