Pulwama, Dec 06: National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Wednesday voiced his concern over the use of language that hurts religious sentiments.
Abdullah’s reference was to a recent statement made by a DMK Parliamentarian from Tamil Nadu during discussions on the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, in the Lok Sabha. The MP, Senthil Kumar, stirred controversy by asserting that the BJP can only win elections in what he termed as “Gaumutra States”. He has now expressed regret over his remarks after the uproar.
Expressing disapproval for such language within the parliamentary setting, Abdullah questioned the necessity of uttering words that could potentially offend individuals. He emphasised the correctness of personal decisions regarding religious affiliation while strongly condemning the mockery of religions followed by a significant portion of the population.
Omar raised the rhetorical question of how people in Tamil Nadu would feel if similar remarks were directed towards them. Calling for mutual respect among communities, he urged individuals to refrain from uttering words that could hurt the sentiments of others.
The former CM stressed the importance of upholding a high level of respect for diverse religious beliefs and advocating for a more tolerant and understanding society.
