Ganderbal, Nov 03: Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Shyambir, and Director Tourism Kashmir, Raja Yakoob, conducted a joint meeting with officers and stakeholders in Sonamarg on Friday to assess the winter preparedness and related facilities to keep the area open during the winter months.

The meeting focused on various aspects, including water supply, electricity, healthcare, road maintenance, fire services, snow clearance operations, traffic management, and the operationalization of Z-Morh Tunnel. Additionally, discussions revolved around heating arrangements in hotels, the promotion of Sonamarg as a twelve-month tourist destination, and the distribution of promotional material at prominent locations.

Director Tourism stressed the importance of cooperation among stakeholders in regulating the tourism trade and providing the best possible experience to tourists. He also mentioned the government’s commitment to promoting Sonamarg as an all-weather tourist destination with the necessary facilities and recreational activities.

To ensure snow clearance, Beacon was instructed to station sufficient personnel and machinery from Gagangeer to Youth Hostel Sonamarg. A joint control room will be established at the CEO office SDA for better coordination.

Regarding water supply, a new scheme is set to be commissioned soon, ensuring sufficient water availability during winter. The meeting also addressed electricity supply, with plans to establish a curtailed schedule for Sonamarg and allow hoteliers to make alternative arrangements during power cuts.

The operationalization of Z-Morh Tunnel for winter traffic was discussed, and the Executive Director of NHIDCL was directed to ensure 24/7 operation of one tube for emergency traffic from December 10th.

To address parking issues, the SDM Kangan will collaborate with SDA to identify suitable parking areas, and necessary repairs will be made with NHIDCL’s assistance.

Chains will be made mandatory for all vehicles from December 15th onwards to enhance safety during winter.

Representatives from the Hotelier Association Sonamarg and other stakeholders raised several issues, all of which will be addressed through proper facilities and arrangements as per the instructions given during the meeting.

Upgrades for PHC Sonamarg’s health facilities were approved, ensuring necessary healthcare services during the winter.

The meeting also discussed winter activity schedules, with stakeholders directed to submit their plans by the second week of November for the upcoming winter festival in Sonamarg.

In conclusion, Director Tourism emphasized the need for all stakeholders to double their efforts in providing sufficient facilities for winter tourists. The tourism department pledged to promote Sonamarg as an all-weather tourist destination and urged all stakeholders to adhere to notified rates when offering services to tourists.
