A versatile artist from Srinagar, Nusrat Fayaz, has engraved her artistic prowess across the globe as she is redefining the role of art in bridging cultural gaps and transcending language barriers. Her journey, from battling familial expectations to becoming a renowned Graphic Designer, Painter, and Photographer, is a testament to her unwavering passion for art and the immense potential it holds.
Nusrat’s artistic journey has been nothing short of inspirational. Born and raised in a middle-class family in Srinagar, her dream of pursuing art was met with initial resistance, a story familiar to many in the region. However, her indomitable spirit and love for art led her to complete her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Arts.
In a candid conversation with Rising Kashmir, Nusrat shared her deep-rooted passion for art, highlighting a common thread in all her works: a dedication to showcasing the rich tapestry of Kashmiri culture, not just to her fellow countrymen but to the international community.
“There was one thing common in all the work which was to showcase our Kashmiri Culture not to our own people but to the international people,” she said.
Over the past several years, Nusrat has explored diverse mediums, delving into monoprints, intricate close-ups of paper, and the intricate world of textile collage art.
“I do not limit my work to Painting or Photography, but I do a lot of experiments in my work such as monoprints, using close-ups of paper, and textile collage art,” she said.
Nusrat advocates that artists should not confine themselves solely to representing Kashmiri culture or people. She passionately urges, “Think beyond, and consider how your work can transcend borders and make an impact globally.” Her belief is simple: art has no boundaries.
Nusrat’s artistic reach extends far beyond the Union Territory of J&K. Her work has graced international stages, notably in Paris, France, as part of the “Europe 2022 Series.
“My work has been featured in various art exhibitions and workshops, not only across India but also on international platforms, where my work garnered widespread acclaim and numerous awards,” she added.
In 2021, she actively participated in National Art Camps and Workshops organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Art Culture, as well as the MSCB MCT (Masters Sansar Chand Baru Memorable Charitable Trust), among others.
“Art has the remarkable power to transcend borders, cultures, and languages. Your work can connect with people across the globe, and it can serve as a bridge between diverse communities,” Nusrat said.
Her accolades include securing first place in the Poster Making Competition organized by NSS, achieving first place in the “Unity & Diversity” Painting Competition by the Department of Student Welfare, and capturing the third position in a poster-making competition organized by Kashmir University and NMHS – MOEF & Government of India.
She was honored with the Bronze Medal at the Art Contest organized by the Indian Art & Art Indian Foundation, and the “Van Gogh Award” from “BM Fine Art & Culture” in West Bengal.
Her artistic prowess extends to the realm of photography, where she’s garnered numerous prestigious awards in the National Online Award Exhibition 2021, organized by Prof. S.B.L Saxena Research Foundation and Kala Yatra, as well as in the Professional category by the Gayoor Art Foundation.
Nusrat’s insatiable appetite for experimentation knows no bounds. Her artistic ventures include unconventional avenues such as monoprints, intricate paper close-ups, and the enthralling world of textile collage art, reaffirming her commitment to pushing the boundaries of her craft.
Recently, she was enrolled in the Master’s in Fine Arts program at Jamia Millia University.
In a message to young artists, she said they should be a source of guiding light, inspiration, and unwavering companionship. Art is a journey of self-discovery, and your passion will fuel your creativity in ways you cannot even imagine, Nusrat said.
”Never be afraid to experiment and push your boundaries. Art knows no limitations, and it’s in those uncharted territories that you often discover your true potential. Whether it is trying new mediums, techniques, or styles, don’t be afraid to take risks. These risks can lead to breakthroughs and innovation,” she added.
“One needs to stay committed to continuous learning and improvement. The journey of an artist is one of growth and evolution. Keep honing your skills, seeking new knowledge, and learning from every piece you create. Do not be disheartened by setbacks; they are often the stepping stones to success, Nusrat said.
“In a world filled with noise and distractions, it has become increasingly important to tune in to our inner selves and follow our dreams. The path to true fulfillment often begins by listening to that quiet but persistent voice inside us,” she added.
