Srinagar, Feb 19: The Jammu and Kashmir Government informed the house that there is no proposal either to upgrade the existing Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Lagama in Uri into a full-fledged Polytechnic College or to shift it to Boniyar Tehsil for better accessibility.
The clarification came in response to questions raised by MLA Uri Dr Sajjad Shafi in the J&K Legislative Assembly, which were replied to by the Deputy Chief Minister, who is also the Minister Incharge Skill Development.
Replying to the first query, the Minister confirmed that an Industrial Training Institute exists at Lagama in Uri constituency and is witnessing good enrolment from Uri and adjoining peripheral areas.
Responding to another question, the Minister also acknowledged that Uri constituency covers a large and geographically dispersed border area and that Boniyar Tehsil serves as an important population and transit centre for the region.
However, when asked whether the government proposes to undertake a feasibility survey for upgrading ITI Lagama into a full-fledged Polytechnic College to strengthen technical education and skill development in the area, the Minister replied in the negative.
The government also ruled out any proposal to examine the feasibility of shifting or relocating the existing ITI from Lagama to Boniyar Tehsil. The Minister stated that, at present, there is no such proposal under consideration.
He further informed the House that shifting the ITI would entail de-affiliation of the institute and require fresh re-affiliation as per the guidelines of the Director General of Training, Government of India. Such a move, he said, would adversely affect the ongoing training programmes at the institute.
