Hits Back at PDP Over ‘Backdoor Appointment’ Allegations

Ganderbal:-  Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday sparked a controversy by defending the sale of liquor in the Union Territory.

Responding to another question regarding alcohol consumption Omar Abdullah said no one was being forced to consume alcohol and maintained that it remained a matter of personal choice.

“Has anyone forced you? You are going to shops on your own choice. We are not dragging you there, nor are we advertising or increasing availability of alcohol, the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister was responding to a query over the administration allowing liquor sales while simultaneously intensifying its anti-drug campaign across Jammu and Kashmir.

“We are not promoting liquor, nor have we increased its availability,” Omar Abdullah said.

Abdullah also rejected the allegations of backdoor appointments leveled by PDP and accused the party of spreading false narratives to divert attention from controversies surrounding the Rajya Sabha elections.

Speaking to reporters in Ganderbal the Chief Minister challenged the PDP to identify even a single instance of an alleged backdoor appointment under his government.

“Tell us one place where a backdoor appointment has taken place. Name even a single person. First of all, outsourcing is not a backdoor appointment,” Omar Abdullah said.

The Chief Minister said there was a clear distinction between outsourcing under government schemes and illegal appointments, asserting that the party was deliberately trying to mislead people.

“Now what should I teach the PDP people? I am tired of explaining things to them. They neither understand Urdu nor English. Should I explain it to them in French? There is a world of difference between backdoor appointments and outsourcing. We are providing jobs and wherever schemes require outsourcing we are doing outsourcing but outsourcing is not a backdoor appointment, he said.

Taking a direct dig at Mehbooba Mufti and the PDP leadership, Omar Abdullah alleged that the party was making “baseless allegations” to cover up its own political controversies.

“Now these PDP leaders are making baseless allegations against us just to hide their own sins. Earlier, they tried using Urdu but failed. Now this ‘backdoor appointment’ narrative has also failed,” he said.

Referring to recent statements made by PDP leaders regarding alleged corruption in transfers and postings, the Chief Minister questioned the credibility of the claims.

“Yesterday, I was listening to one of their speeches where they claimed an officer seeking a transfer was asked for money.

“Then Madam said no inquiry was held because the minister involved is the treasurer of the National Conference. Madam should first tell us which minister is the treasurer of the National Conference,” he said.

Omar Abdullah clarified that the treasurer of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference was Member of Parliament Shami Oberoi and not any minister.

“As far as I know, our treasurer is Member of Parliament Shami Oberoi and he has never been a minister either in Jammu and Kashmir or at the Centre. At least lie carefully. Now they tell lies that are exposed within seconds,” he added.

The Chief Minister further accused the PDP of trying to divert attention from RTI-based revelations related to the Rajya Sabha elections.
