Budgam, Sept 09: An Apni Party candidate, along with eight other candidates, has withdrawn from the race for the upcoming assembly elections in Budgam district’s five constituencies.
Earlier, Farooq Ahmad Mir, an independent candidate from Lakhripora, Budgam, had withdrawn his candidacy, which was accepted on Friday. Following this, Muntazir Mohi Ud from the Apni Party, along with two independent candidates, Bismah Nabi and Mohammad Abdullah Bhat, withdrew their nominations for the Budgam constituency.
In other constituencies, Farooq Ahmad Khan, an independent candidate from Charar-i-Sharief, withdrew his nomination. Similarly, Afiqa from the Rashtriya Samaj Dal, representing the Chadoora constituency, also stepped down. Bashir Ahmad Wani, an independent candidate from Khansahib, and two independents from Beerwah, Azhar Hussain Wani and Firdous Ahmad Bhat, also withdrew from the race.
In the Budgam constituency, 14 candidates had filed their nominations. After four withdrawals, only eight candidates remain in the race. In Beerwah, 19 nominations were submitted, with 12 accepted after two withdrawals.
For Khansahib, 17 candidates filed nominations, but after one candidate withdrew, 10 remain. In Chadoora, nine nominations were submitted, and after one withdrawal, six candidates were left. In Charar-i-Sharief, out of the 14 nominations, 11 were accepted, and one candidate withdrew, leaving 10 in the fray.
Across the five constituencies in the Budgam district, a total of 73 nomination papers were submitted. Of these, 47 were accepted, 17 were rejected, and nine candidates withdrew. As a result, 46 candidates will contest the elections across these five constituencies on September 25.
