Srinagar, Apr 07: Wandaj village in Karnah area of north Kashmir continues to live in darkness, even decades after independence, with residents saying they have never seen electricity in their lives.

Located in a remote and hilly belt, the village remains cut off from basic power supply. Locals say their daily life is shaped by hardship, especially during winters when nights are long and harsh.

“We have grown up without electricity. Our children study under lamps. Nothing has changed for us,” said a local resident. Another villager added, “We hear about development everywhere, but our village is still waiting for basic light.”

The issue recently reached the Assembly, where MLA Karnah Javid Ahmad Mirchal raised a question about the electrification status of Wandaj village and sought a timeline for power supply.

In its reply, the government admitted that Wandaj remains unelectrified due to its remote location and difficult terrain. However, it said that the electrification process has now been taken up under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme. Officials stated that the Letter of Award has been issued and that surveys and technical drawings have been completed and approved.

The government further informed that work on the project is expected to begin shortly. It added that the village will be electrified in a phased manner during the current financial year, depending on weather conditions and accessibility in the area.

Despite these assurances, residents remain sceptical. “We have heard such promises before. Until we see poles and wires on the ground, we cannot believe it,” said another villager.

The lack of electricity has affected education, healthcare, and livelihoods in Wandaj. Students struggle to study after sunset, while residents depend on traditional means for lighting and heating.
