Srinagar, Apr 08: A viral video from a wetland in Srinagar has triggered an official probe, with Wildlife Warden, Wetland Division, Altaf Ahmad, confirming that an investigation is underway to verify the footage and identify the individuals involved.
Ahmad said the video was shared with him recently. He directed concerned range officers to verify its authenticity, identify the individuals seen in the clip, and confirm the exact location. “The matter is under investigation. We will soon reach a clear conclusion about the individuals and the location,” he said.
He stressed that anti-poaching measures are already active, especially during the migratory bird season. “In the last one month alone, we have seized nearly seven guns, around 40 to 45 cartridges, boats, and other equipment like decoys used by poachers,” he said. He added that three individuals have been arrested recently and cases have been registered in the court of the Forest Magistrate.
Rejecting claims that such incidents are frequent, Ahmad said enforcement has improved. “We have been able to control poaching incidents by a large margin. Most cases are under check,” he said.
He explained that wetlands are large and open, with multiple entry points, which makes monitoring difficult. However, he said public support plays a key role. “We are thankful to whoever recorded and shared this video. It helps us take quick action if something escapes our notice,” he said.
The department continues round-the-clock patrolling in major wetlands, including Hokersar, Shalbugh, and Hygam, along with other areas outside notified zones. Ahmad said teams also patrol places like Wular Lake, Dal Lake, and Narkara, where recent action included seizure of weapons and destruction of illegal setups used by poachers.
He said aggressive patrolling and sustained action have led to a decline in poaching incidents across the region, and efforts will continue to ensure wetlands remain protected.
