Srinagar, Apr 03: The Fisheries Department Srinagar has generated Rs 57 lakh in revenue during the financial year 2025–26, driven by strong trout sales, an expanded licensing drive, and intensified action against illegal fishing in Dal Lake and adjoining water bodies.
Official data shows Rs 26 lakh was realised from trout sales, reflecting robust demand and improved production systems. The department also earned Rs 3.87 lakh from fish seed distribution, supporting aquaculture and stock enhancement efforts.
Licensing emerged as another key contributor, with 1,832 fishing licences issued during the year, generating Rs 20.07 lakh and promoting regulated fishing while supporting local livelihoods.
In a major enforcement drive, authorities seized 5,551 illegal gill nets from Dal Lake and nearby areas. These nets pose a serious ecological threat by trapping juvenile and mature fish, disrupting breeding cycles.
An amount of Rs 2.15 lakh was recovered from violators, underscoring strict action against illegal fishing. Officials said surveillance and patrolling have been intensified to safeguard aquatic biodiversity.
The department reiterated its commitment to balancing revenue generation with ecological protection, urging fishermen to obtain proper licences and adhere to sustainable fishing practices.
