SKUAST-K organizes one day training program for tribal farmers

Srinagar, Apr 03: SKUAST-K’s Dryland Agriculture Research Station (DARS) Budgam in collaboration with KVK Ganderbal organised awareness cum training programme under TSP Pulses on 03rd April 2024 at Shuhama campus.
The programme targeting tribal farmers of the district was organized to popularize pulses across the district. The daylong programme was attended by Scientists of DARS, Scientific and supporting staff of KVK Ganderbal and tribal farmers of the district.
Dr. Eajaz Ahmad Dar Scientist (Agronomy) described the significance of the programme and informed the farmers about pulse crop production and way forward. Dr. Ishfaq Abidi, Senior Scientist & Head KVK Ganderbal gave a comprehensive overview of significance of Pulses and their huge potential to enhance nutritional status of farmers and improve their socioeconomic condition.
He called for popularization of production and consumption of pulses across the District, as they are rich in phytochemicals and offer numerous health benefits. Dr. Abidi ensured full support to the farmers & advised them to perform their farming operations under the guidance of KVK Scientists.
In the technical session, Prof. Sher A. Dar (Scientist DARS) gave a detailed overview about importance of moong in ensuring food security & economic stability. He deliberated on nutritional value of moong and described the various improved varieties released by the University. In the second session, Dr. Latief Ahmad (Scientist DARS) described the complete package of practices about cultivation of moong including field preparation, seed rate, fertilizer requirement & pest/disease management. Dr. Rafiya informed the participants about the nutritional values of pulse crop and their value addition. Dr. Farooq A. Ahanger deliberated on disease insect infestation of pulse and other horticultural crops. On the occasion, farm implements, improved varieties of seed & literature (package of practice) were distributed among the 35 participants of different tribal areas.
The programme concluded with the Interaction cum Feedback Session between the Scientists and trainees. The participants raised various questions regarding pulse cultivation and expressed satisfaction for conduct of the programme. During the vote of thanks by Dr. Suja Qureshi, the initiative for the benefit for the tribal farmers was lauded and support from ICAR and DARS was acknowledged.
